feature: Devil (2010)

Devil poster M Night ShyamalanLot of talk about the upcoming horror film, Devil, at the moment. I have to admit… I really like the idea. A group of random people get trapped in a lift and spooky things happen… is one of them the Devil? Sounds cool. Simple but could be very effective. Course it might not be, but as usual, I live in hope with all horror films.

The screenplay is from Brian Nelson, the writer of Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night and the directors, the Dowdle brothers, previously worked together on Quarantine – a film I meant to see but I ended up seeing [REC] instead. So, decent enough pedigree…

The only reservations I’m hearing about Devil is about the stuff on the posters saying it’s “from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan“. I’ve never seen an M. Night Shyamalan film so makes no odds to me. Who knows… maybe I’ll turn out to be a lucky person who sees one Shyamalan film, loves it, and never has to worry about any of his other films…

…Besides, he was only involved in the story and I gather he has some pretty good ideas.

There’s a load of different clips for this film floating around at the moment and the guys at Universal Pictures Ireland were kind enough to give me access to this one. My friend over at Scannain.com has an exclusive clip and Movies.ie are featuring a clip as well. So if you like the one below, pop on over and have a look at theirs too.

Devil is releasing in Ireland on 17th September 2010.

Yeah it sounds good although it does seem to have borrowed from Blackout which was released in 2007. But, Blackout was a terrible film and the added supernatural element should add a extra dimension to what could be a great small-scale thriller.

Yeah, it’s one of those things – kind of like Buried (which I should be seeing on Wednesday) – it’s not a particularly original idea but it’s a strong concept and if it’s done well it could be great. Definitely one with potential but it’s really going to be relying on the actors to pull it off, hope they’re up to it.
