movie news: First trailer for Butter, starring Jennifer Garner & Olivia Wilde

Olivia Wilde and Jennifer Garner face off in this first trailer for the upcoming indie comedy Butter.

The film premiered back in the Telluride Film Festival last year but I can’t honestly say I heard anything about it until I got confused by people talking about butter in my twitter feed today. Reviews were apparently mixed at best at the festival but honestly, I’m pretty sold on the trailer.

I’d almost rather you watched it first, so go ahead, watch it first.

A political satire set in the world of competitive butter sculpting. How could I not want to see that? The script is by first time feature writer, Jason Micallef and it’s directed by Jim Field Smith who brought us She’s Out Of My League back in 2010.

I laughed way more than I probably should have at She’s Out of My League and this boasts a pretty solid cast for an indie so I’m cautiously optimistic for this one. After all, Jennifer Garner, Olivia Wilde, Ty Burrell, Ashley Greene, Hugh Jackman, Rob Corddry and Alicia Silverstone can’t all be wrong… can they?

There’s no UK or Ireland release date listed for this yet but it’s due in US cinemas on 04 Oct 2012.

Another good sign? I always find myself enjoying Rob Corddry films way more than I expect… so…

Ever seen or heard of ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’? This is that film, but the premise changed from Middle America beauty pageant to butter sculpting.

That doesn’t make it bad, because Drop Dead Gorgeous was quirky and hilarious. What’s weird is that….this almost feels the same in presentation and the way the characters are designed to play off of each other. It’s like they read the same formula and applied it.

Cool to see Modern Family’s Ty Burrell make the jump from TV to movie.

Did a double take at 2:01 in the trailer. “Oh my god, is that…?!?” Yes, yes it is. Alicia Silverstone! She looks great! She seems to be one of these actresses with a natural beauty.

WTF? Hugh Jackman? I totally didn’t recognize him as the car salesman.

I’ve heard of it alright but I’ve never seen it. I hear it’s good though. I guess that kind of thing is based in truth but I’d be interested to see how they’re gonna work it here.

I’ve never seen Modern Family, worth a look? Does it start off slow or is it all good?

Hahah! I have no idea if butter sculpting is real.

I strongly recommend Drop Dead Gorgeous for your to-watch list. Excellent to see with friends and have some popcorn. You’ll be surprised at how many actresses you’ll recognise. Definitely a trip down nostalgia lane.

Modern Family is definitely worth a look. The first episode is very well done, introducing all the characters and setting them up for the next 4 or 5 eps that have more focus on one or more of them. It sets the tempo and it sticks to it. Its humour is similar in spirit to Ben Stiller’s brand of cringe-inducing embarassment/bad-decisions humour but usually ties up each episode with a sweet personal-growth conclusion.
