film review: Battleship (2012)

Whether or not you’ll like Battleship will be very much predicated on your ability to ignore rubbish. Your tolerance for nonsense, if you will…

… Because, my oh my, is there a lot of rubbish in Battleship. If you can get past that then it’s all smooth sailing. Or not, as the case may be.

Battleship film, movie poster 2012, RihannaHi folks!

You may or may not have noticed that I posted up recently about new Universal Pictures film, Battleship… Have a look – clips and trailers: Battleship.

It looks to me like good popcorn fun and I, for one, am looking forward to seeing how they establish that relationship to the game. Tangentially hopefully. I’m looking forward to the exploding stuff. It looks like they’re gonna explode the hell out of things. Carnage. Also, Liam Neeson is in it, and in everything I’ve seen him in lately, he’s been mad as hell and not gonna to take it any more. Let’s hope he’s reprising that attitude for this.

If, like me, you can’t wait to see how they fit the game in… and the explosions, then you’re in luck… I have tickets to give away! Not just tickets, but stuff too!

I have 5 packs to give away containing the following items:

* A pair of tickets for the BATTLESHIP after-work party at 5.30pm followed by the screening of the film at 7pm in The Savoy, O’Connell Street, Dublin 1 on April 11th.

    AND

* A Male T-Shirt
* A Pair of Sunglasses.
* 2 Battleship caps
* A Waterproof Case

To be in with a chance to win one of these packs just answer the following question:

Q: Which Pop/R&B superstar is making her feature film acting debut in Battleship?

a) Rihanna
b) Cher
c) Scarlett Johansson

Need a hint? She’s in the trailer below so just have a look!

Battleship - pen and paper versionI have to admit, when I first heard there was going to a movie based on the game of Battleship… I was skeptical.

Particularly because the only Battleship games I ever played consisted of taking a piece of paper and pencil, drawing a dotted grid, and shading in squares for the aircraft carrier, submarine, destroyer and, of course, the titular battleship.

Apparently, things moved on since then and you can get proper Battleship board games, with a board and all, there’s even video games… I hear you can even get it on your phone. Fancy that. It’s a far cry from ye olden days, sure when I was your age… *cough**splutter**wheeze* err…

To be honest, I can’t even being to imagine how the Battleship I knew could possibly be translated into a movie… and judging by the trailers that have been released for the Battleship movie, neither could they. Or, perhaps that’ll be the big reveal when the film comes out, they’re just hiding it from us.

Secretly, and as ridiculous as it would be, I actually do want them to shoehorn the game thing in there… I don’t know how and I don’t care. I’ll smile. It’s probably for the best if they don’t though, because from what I’ve seen of the clips and trailers out there, it looks like this film could be a lot of fun. It looks like a real film and everything. Well, a real popcorn film, but there’s nothing wrong with that. I love a good popcorn film.

Front and centre of the marketing is the fact that Battleship comes to you from “The company that brought you Transformers“. The toy company, Hasbro, that is, rather than the film-makers. Which is slightly unbelieveable given how similar to Transformers is to the look, sound and feel of the trailers we’ve seen so far. I’m not complaining though, I loved Transformers so… it’s fine by me.

Have a look at the videos below, including an exclusively Irish trailer (!), and let me know – are you looking forward to Battleship: The Movie?
