movie news: Posters, trailer and stills from Oz: The Great and Powerful

Oz: The Great and Powerful teaser posterSan Deigo Comic-Con 2012 continues (I’m not jealous of people there, I swear) with news from Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful.

The poster was released last week and now we have two more stills from the film plus the teaser trailer. Actually when I first saw them I wasn’t sure if they were film stills or just artwork, but looking at the trailer it definitely looks like that’s the quality we can expect from the film. I think we can agree, they look stunning. We can right?

Rather than a retelling of the Wizard of Oz story, Oz: The Great and Powerful is a prequel. James Franco is starring as small-time magician, Oscar Diggs, in this story about how the Wizard of Oz became that wonderful wizard. Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams are starring as the witches Theodora, Evanora and Glinda respectively and Zach Braff and Abigail Spencer are also featured.

I have to say, after Spider-Man 3 (worst superhero film EVER) I wasn’t particularly excited by the idea of Sam Raimi doing another big budget feature… but the stuff I’ve seen about Oz: The Great and Powerful so far has definitely brought me on side.

You’ll have to wait till 8th March 2013 to see Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful in Ireland but for the moment, here’s the first trailer and you can have a look at the stills under it – click for the full sizes.

It looks class doesn’t it? It looks like a proper epic fantasy adventure.

I suppose I am still a little bit cautious though because… well it is a little Alice in Wonderland looking… let’s just hope it’s as epic as it looks and that they don’t decide to put ALL THE VILLAINS RAIMI CAN FIND into the film.

Hmm, well it doesn’t have Johnny Depp in it, so that’s the first step for it to NOT be another Alice in Wonderland.

Don’t get me wrong, Johnny is very cool. But…yeah…the schtick is getting old.
