movie news: First Trailer for Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Angelina Jolie in full goth mode…
Disney’s taking a walk on the dark side in this brand new trailer for Maleficent. Named for the iconic Disney villain from 1959’s Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent is apparently both a prequel and a remake of the classic film. Or perhaps the summary writers just aren’t sure.
Now it is coming from a first time director, Robert Stromberg, but he has won two Oscars for Art Direction… so that’s pretty good. If you think trailer’s got a bit of an Alice in Wonderland / Oz: The Great and Powerful feel about it, that’s probably because he was Production Designer on both…
I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while. I suppose Disney adventures aren’t particularly my thing but when the first set photos from Maleficent started leaking last June, I was intrigued to say the least.
I also think the idea of going back and exploring why a Disney villain became a villain is a fascinating one. What goes into creating the archetype…? I want to know more.
And I will know more in next May 2014… yes, it’s a bit of a while to wait but I think it might be worth. Oh, and also I’m a big fan of Angelina Jolie.
