clips and trailers: The Muppets – The Trailers

You can see all the film clips over at my previous post, clips and trailers: The Muppets – The Clips. There were so many I decided to split up the clips and trailers for The Muppets… These are no ordinary trailers though. The Muppets have done parody trailers as well as normal ones. It’s a Muppetastic haul of videos!

All the trailers I could find from official sources are below. I’ve put them in broadly chronological order. That is, in the order they were released, as far as I can tell. There were too many to keep track of at the time!

As a bonus too, I’ve throw in the trailer for the 2nd Toy Story Toons short film from Pixar. This one’s called Small Fry and it’s showing before cinema screenings of The Muppets. I think it’ll be fun, the Hawaiian Vacation one before Cars 2 was and I do love Toy Story

The Muppets are back on the big screen! It’s been 12 years since Kermit, Miss Piggy and the gang went to space so it’s high time that they came back to us.

Now since this film released in the US back in November, there are plenty of clips and trailers available so I may as well get straight to it…

… actually, there’s so many clips and trailer out there I’m going to split this into two posts.

You can see all The Muppets parody trailers and a sneak peak of the Toy Story Toons over at this post: clips and trailers: The Muppets – The Trailers.

And all the clips I could find are below…

clips and trailers: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

updated: 19 Sept 2012

Here it is folks, the full teaser trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey!

I did a bit of a blurb about how excited about this movie I am over on the production video clips feature. I’ll be keeping that one updated with any production clips that appear. Meanwhile though, I figured that we’ll be getting more film clips and trailers as the release date comes closer (my birthday next year!) so I thought I would set up a new hub for them.

With the release date some ways away there’s only the one trailer but keep checking back and I’ll put up everything I can. Oh also, I forgot to mention in the previous post, the novel is being made into two films so it’s really The Hobbit, part 1 that’s out next year – The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again is due out on 13 Dec 2013.

Edit: 19 Sep 2012 There are now three films, the second part, still set for 13 Dec 2013 is now called The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and the third is set for 18 July 2014 and is called The Hobbit: There and Back Again, just to make things confusing.

I am excited about these, very excited. The Hobbit was one of my favourite books growing up and the fact is that – whether I can imagine ever sitting down and watching them all again or not – I do think that The Lord of the Rings films were some of the greatest films ever made.

Anyway, let me know what you think of this first trailer. Are you looking forward to the film as much as I am??

clips and trailers: John Carter (2012)

Traditionally, I haven’t expected sci-fi epics from Walt Disney Pictures but after TRON: Legacy (a movie which really deserved to be seen by more people, damn snow!) that view has had to change. The Mouse, it seems, is happy to go to seek out that final frontier…

… Not that this has anything to do with Mickey Mouse.

Instead, John Carter (formerly John Carter of Mars) is based on the series of Mars adventure stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs, published between 1917 and 1943. In the books Mars is known as Barsoom by it’s inhabitants, a variety of different coloured Martians, and the planet is portrayed as one troubled by strife as the various races fight for the scarce resources available. It’s not entirely clear if the races will all be different colours in the film but I thought I saw some blue ones and some green ones. To be honest I’m surprised I’ve never heard of the series, in any case the books certainly seem ripe for film adaptation*.

As far as I can gather, this movie is drawing from Burroughs’ first book, A Princess of Mars but there may be elements from some of the others. The premise is simple enough… John Carter is a Confederate Captain in the American Civil War who find himself somehow transported to Mars and landed in the middle of a heated conflict. He soon discovers that he may be the only person who can bring peace to the tortured but majestic planet.

I’m always up for a sci-fi adventure but I’m very curious to see what audience they’re going to target. Watch the trailers and you won’t be able to miss the sniff of Avatar (despite the very different setting) and I would consider Avatar as an older, at least 12+/15+ audience… But then again it is Disney and in my eyes TRON: Legacy ended up being pitched younger than that. Are we looking at a 12A or a PG here…? I don’t mind either way but it will, of course, shape how I personally view the film.

update (05 March 2012): Many more clips, trailers, featurettes etc added. Also the cert is confirmed as a 12A in Ireland and the running time is confirmed at 132 mins.

A new Mission: Impossible film hey?

I can’t say I was enamoured with the idea. I hated the first Mission: Impossible film. Hated it. Somehow I ended up going to see it in the cinema 3 times that summer, so my hatred of it became properly ingrained. I never saw the other two. I didn’t think I could take it if they were anything like the first.

But that was 15 years ago.

I am older now… and I like to think I have becoming more forgiving, more accepting, with age. I no longer rage at bad movies. I try to see the good in all films… well, sometimes.

And so, I am vaguely looking forward to Mission; Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Ever since Tropic Thunder I’ve felt far more positive about Tom Cruise. Now that he’s older he doesn’t seem half as smug. Mind you, I haven’t actually seen a Tom Cruise film since Tropic Thunder

… No matter, the big thing for me is that Jeremy Renner is in this. It’s the first of his big upcoming action roles – the others being The Avengers (Avengers clips and trailers) and The Bourne Legacy – so it’ll be all eyes to see if he can handle it. IMO he was fantastic in The Hurt Locker, a movie which (dare I say it?) I thought was vastly over-rated, so I’m all up to see what he can do.

There are quite a few clips, trailers and featurettes available for Mission Impossible 4, so have a look below and let me know what you think…

update (14 Dec 11): 4 new clips added (Girl Fight, From the Outside, Open the Door and Sandstorm) and added film running time.

update (07 Jan 12): 1 new clip added (Getting on the Train and 4 new featurettes, Meet the Team, Brad Bird Q+A, Jeremy Renner Q+A and Paula Patton Q+A

feature: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) – production video clips

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Now this is the one I’ve been waiting for. And it’s coming out on my birthday! Yay!

I was never a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings novels growing up. Mainly because I never read them when I was growing up. I only read them just before the movies came out. I thought it would be a bit of a disservice to them if I didn’t. I did however read The Hobbit

… And I loved The Hobbit. Which is not to take away from The Lord of the Rings or the subsequent films. I still believe that they were some of the greatest movies ever made, the scope and the scale laid out in those films was incredible… but this is the story I want to see told.

It’s a little early to be doing a clips and trailer post, since they’re still in the middle of filming it… so there aren’t any clips and trailers. Luckily though, Peter Jackson has been keeping us up to date with what going on in New Zealand. He has been releasing production videos telling us about filming for 3D, the RED Cameras he’s using and giving us little peeks and looks at the sets. It’s all very exciting.

Have a look at the videos below to keep up with the production, I’ll be sure to add new videos as they are released.

update (21 Dec 11): Just letting you know that I have now created a new post for the clips and trailers that will be coming for The Hobbit. I’ll still be updating this one with production videos but there is an all new teaser trailer now over on clips and trailers: The Hobbit (2012).

clips and trailers: Super 8 (2011)

Well, well, well… what have we got here? It’s been a couple of years but J.J. Abrams has finally come out with a new film. Super 8 is actually only his 3rd film but with Steven Spielberg all over the promotional materials, you can rest assured this is a biggie.

Ok, to be fair, they’ve all been biggies…

Anyone else think it’s kind of strange that this guy went from directing a few random TV show episodes to directing Tom Cruise in a Mission: Impossible film? Just me? Not that I’m particularly complaining. I never saw M:I3 but I really liked Star Trek so it’s fine by me.

None of this tells you about Super 8 though. Basically, it’s about a bunch of kids in 1979 who go out to make a short film and randomly find themselves in the middle of some alien madness. I can’t really say fairer than that without giving anything away. I was lucky enough to see it the other day and I really do think you should go see it too. It’s great. Well, I think it’s great. You might not. I don’t want to big it up too much….

Anyway, it’s already out in the US and it’s out in the UK and Ireland today so, judging by my analytics, most of you should be able to go see, right now. Do it.

But if you can’t, here’s some clips and trailers to tide you over. Undoubtedly some of the clips are quite spoilerish but I’ll leave that up to you.

Back in 2008 the world was introduced to a cute little panda called Po. Well maybe he wasn’t all that little… and he wasn’t like fantastically cute. But he was cuddly and people all over the world fell in love with him and all his antics in Kung Fu Panda.

Except me, I didn’t love Kung Fu Panda. I liked Kung Fu Panda, don’t get me wrong (Heaven forbid!) but I didn’t love Po. He was grand. It was entertaining enough.

Roll on 2011 and Po is back… and to my surprise, I really liked it. Awesome. This isn’t a review though so I’m not going to say any more about it… here’s some clips, featurettes and a trailer for your perusal.

clips and trailers: Thor (2011)

When I was a kid I used to read about Norse Gods a lot. I dunno, they were much more interesting than the ol’ bible stories. I mean there was that one guy whose children were a serpent, a wolf and a creepy daughter who ruled over Hel. He was always my favourite. Not that Thor wasn’t cool like… but, you know, he was just this dude with a hammer who made the thunder. I know Loki kind of got his own movie… but… really? I hope he gets a real movie.

But I digress. Thor is the latest independent production from Marvel Studios. It’s all part of a big plan that started in 2008 with Iron Man. Actually I have no idea if the plan really started in 2008 but certainly they added a few more characters, and indeed foreshadowed this movie, in Iron Man 2. Now they’re doing Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011 before tying the characters all in together in The Avengers, due 2012. The only people, afaik, who aren’t coming back for The Avengers are the folks who were in 2008′s The Incredible Hulk. That one didn’t quite go according to plan.

Anyway, I haven’t seen any clips around at the moment but soon as they appear I’ll put them up here. What I do have though is this cool interactive guide where you can unlock new footage and stills and have a look at the characters that appear in the film. Also, there’s a couple of trailers.

I’m hopeful about Thor however I’m not willing to nail my colours to mast on it yet. I have however heard from the self-proclaimed “all-knowing movie soothsayer” and he assures me it will be “awesome”. So that’s something.

clips and trailers: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011)

And so it ends.

Finally we are at Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

It’s been a long journey. I think a lot of people won’t realise this, but the first novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was first published on 30th June 1997, 14 years ago. I kind think it’s a pity that this last film is releasing two weeks after it’s anniversary. It kinda would have been cool if it was the same date. Oh well.

In those 14 years we’ve seen Harry Potter become a truly global phenomena. A proper one, not like those ones that pop up on YouTube every couple of weeks. These novels have seen JK Rowling go from being a single mother on benefits to the 12th richest woman in Britain. Impressive.

Anyway, I guess there’s no need to give a synopsis of Harry Potter. All that’s really worth saying is that if you haven’t seen any of the films or read any of the books, you really shouldn’t go to this film. There’s no point. It’s the 8th film in a series of 8. You’re not going to know what’s going on. If you really want to see this one, you’d be best getting hold of the DVDs (or books) and watching it all first…

… Fortunately for you, the first 7 films are all now available on DVD. So what are you waiting for? Take thee to the DVD store!
