feature: The Woman in Black – YouTube Ghost Story competition

The Woman in Black poster, Daniel RadcliffeA while ago, I did a clips and trailers post for The Woman in Black. It looks like a good old fashioned ghost story and I’m very much looking forward to it, I honestly thought that teaser trailer was one of the scariest things I’ve seen in a long time. I’m a big horror fan and I watch a lot of “scary” films but the truth is, I’m rarely really creeped out in the cinema any more… so anything that looks like it might be get me? I’m there.

Anyway, you can read more about the film over on that post because what I wanted to highlight here was the YouTube competition that was organised around its release.

The concept was simple but it was pretty cool. They wanted to find the UK’s spookiest ghost story. They invited people from all over the UK to sumbit videos of their original ghost stories to The Woman in Black YouTube channel. Stories had to be under 2 minutes but the videos could be as simple as someone just making a recording from their phone’s camera. It was open to all ages but as far as I can see there was a rather youthful bent to the entrants.

Just before the Christmas the 10 finalists were announced, chosen on the basis of their story’s creativity, originality and writing style. Those 10 went to a public vote… The prize? The winner of the competition would get a trip to the world premiere in London but better yet their story would be read out by Daniel Radcliffe himself for inclusion on the DVD release of the film. Not bad hey?

Well, the competition was quite the success and it was great example of a company doing something a bit more original with social media to promote a film. I don’t know how many entries they got in total but there are 175 on their playlist on the official YouTube channel – youtube.com/thewomaninblackmovie. You can see all the competition entries over there but I’ve got the top 10 here for your viewing pleasure.

The winner in the end was Nicola Torch, a 16 year old from Lancashire, with her story entitled “Fear of Hue”, which you can see below. Congrats Nicola, hope you enjoyed the premiere and looking forward to seeing your ghost story on the DVD!

Personally, I’m really looking forward to this one. Not because I’m particularly interested in what Daniel Radcliffe is up to post-Harry Potter. But because I thought the original teaser trailer was that damn creepy.

The Woman in Black is an adaptation of a Susan Hill novel that’s been given the Jane Goldman treatment (Kick-Ass / Stardust). The film is being directed by James Watkins who’s only directed Eden Lake before this but he has written a few other features. I haven’t seen Eden Lake but Goldman has certainly done some good work with Kick-Ass and Stardust and, in my opinion, X-Men: First Class so I am pretty hopeful.

I’m also hopeful that Radcliffe can act. It’ll be interesting to see what he can do with another character; it certainly sounds like a bit of a departure from what he’s used to anyway. I’m somewhat suspicious that he’s playing a character that has a son, but sure, these things can happen…

Briefly, Radcliffe plays Arthur Kipps, a lawyer who has to leave his young son in London and go to a remote village to tie up the affairs of the deceased owner of a large estate, Eel Marsh House. All alone in the eerie mansion, he starts to notice something strange about the village, it’s inhabitants and the mansion itself…

… undoubtedly, scares ensue.

update 21/11/11: There is a quite a cool competition running for budding horror writers out there. clips and trailers: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011)

And so it ends.

Finally we are at Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

It’s been a long journey. I think a lot of people won’t realise this, but the first novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was first published on 30th June 1997, 14 years ago. I kind think it’s a pity that this last film is releasing two weeks after it’s anniversary. It kinda would have been cool if it was the same date. Oh well.

In those 14 years we’ve seen Harry Potter become a truly global phenomena. A proper one, not like those ones that pop up on YouTube every couple of weeks. These novels have seen JK Rowling go from being a single mother on benefits to the 12th richest woman in Britain. Impressive.

Anyway, I guess there’s no need to give a synopsis of Harry Potter. All that’s really worth saying is that if you haven’t seen any of the films or read any of the books, you really shouldn’t go to this film. There’s no point. It’s the 8th film in a series of 8. You’re not going to know what’s going on. If you really want to see this one, you’d be best getting hold of the DVDs (or books) and watching it all first…

… Fortunately for you, the first 7 films are all now available on DVD. So what are you waiting for? Take thee to the DVD store!

review: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

It’s been said before but I’ll say it again, Harry Potter is a phenomenon, both literary and cinematic. In terms of Irish box office, all of the films so far have been in the top 5 of their year… and this is a country where The Hangover is currently #1 for the year.

I actually don’t know if I’ve seen all the films but I do know that I read 5.5 of the books. I only got about half way through this particular book. I had enjoyed them but after the behemoth that was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix I just couldn’t face another one. I really just thought that HPATOOTP was crying out for a good editor and I couldn’t read another one thinking the same thing. That said, I did know what happens in the end of Half-Blood Prince, a wikipedia vandal spoiled that one for me!

Personally, while I do think it’s a brillant story, I haven’t been that pushed on going to the films. They have been so close to the books that you don’t really need to see them, they are pretty much exactly as you imagine them so what’s the point. I’ll probably go along and see the next two though, just because I never got around to reading the last book. So it was with a certain lack of anticipation that I went along to the Savoy to see it at the Irish première…

… and about 3 hours later (there was a delay) I walked out thinking ok, that was how I imagined it. Which is not to say that I didn’t enjoy it but it seem a bit like… ok.

I really did enjoy it though, I thought it looked brillant and I really like how it was that bit darker. It was well balanced but if I had to criticise I’d say that it almost swept over things too quick… I’m not sure how, since it was 2 and a half hours long… but it did.

My word of warning would be that it is not a stand alone film. Harry Potter is absolutely a series and if you haven’t read the books or seen all the other films, then there really is no point in going. It will not make sense. I think that’s fair enough but I do wonder now if film really was the way to go… given how rushed some part of this one felt, and how they are splitting the last book into two films, perhaps they should have just made it a TV series spanning a few seasons?

Anyway I don’t have that much to say by way of critque to be honest! It was exactly what it said on the tin, the actors were the same as they’ve always been (ok, not amazing), as were the effects (excellent), and the score (suitably dramatic) so as it was a good story well told, I gave it an 8/10 on twitter. On further reflection I’m going to downgrade that to a 7.5, I’m taking that half a point off as it felt a bit like a placeholder film really…

7.5/10
