releasing this week: Whip It and Shelter

There’s actually only 3 movies releasing this Friday in Ireland… I guess we’re all supposed to go to Kick-Ass or Clash of the Titans. Unfortunately for me, I’ve seen both of those so new movies it is!

Whip It Ellen Page Drew BarrymoreWhip It is notable as it is Drew Barrymore feature film directorial debut. It may also be notable because it’s good but I can’t vouch for that yet.

It’s based on Shauna Crosses’s fictional novel Derby Girl, which tells the story of a girl in Texas who finds refuge in the world of Roller derby. Everybody’s second favourite indie film chick*, Ellen Page plays the lead. Personally I have trouble watching her, I was shocked to realise she was nominated for an Oscar… but still, the film looks good enough for me to overlook that for the moment.

I can’t imagine that roller derby is well known in Ireland but I did find a facebook group for Irish Roller Derby so if you’re inclined to find out more I presume they would be the people to talk to. The only reason I’d ever heard of it was because there was episode of LA Ink which featured a roller derby girl. It looked interesting. I still don’t quite understand it though so I may just go along to this film to find out more about it.

Shelter Jonathan Rhys MeyersSecond film? Shelter. I really don’t know how I missed this one. I had never even heard of it till I saw an ad on TV two nights ago. That ad kinda freaked me out so I reckoned that made it deserving of a highlight this week.

As I’m sure you know, I’m allergic to spoilers so I haven’t watched a full trailer or anything for fear of seing something I should but as far as I can tell it’s some kind of horror film produced by the people who produced The Ring. I never really get why they highlight the fact that a producer who’s involved has produced some other film… Three of the other producers also produced The Air I Breathe and two of them also produced the last two Twilight films… Why not mention that? Actually only two of the seven producers of this film were involved in The Ring… but I digress…

Right, so yes, it’s some kind of horror thriller… Julianne Moore (I like her, she’s cool) plays a psychiatrist who is introduced to a patient with multiple personality disorder. Recipe for disaster if I’ve ever heard one… well… on film anyway. You don’t see many happy functioning personalities when multiple personality disorder is portayed on screen – I’ve no idea how it all works in real life.

Quite randomly this is an American film, written by a British screenwriter and directed by two Swedish folks. I thought that was interesting. None of them have done anything I really think is worth talking about… Hmm. Well the screenwriter did write and direct Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman…. but I don’t know if I should have mentioned that. That’s not a minus for me though.

The other film this week is…

I Am Love (Io sono l’amore) – Italian love story starring Tilda Swinton and set in Milan. Limited release.

Whip It, Shelter and I Am Love are all in Irish cinemas from Friday 9th April 2010.

* who’s number one? this girl I assume, she’s so hot right now…

    Great round up:)
Will probably check out Whip It, I’m a fan of Drew Barrymore, not so much of Ellen Page, like yourself though. Unfortunately, I doubt that I Am Love will feature here (Cork!) which is a pity.
As for Shelter, doesn’t sound half bad, but I’m such a scaredy cat, so will have to stay away, I think.

Not much too round up this week! Yeah, as far as I can tell it looks like I Am Love will only be in usual Dublin suspects – IFI, Lighthouse and Cineworld.

I’d like to give Whip It a go but not sure I’ll get the chance, I’m so behind on reviews that I may have to forgoe a cinema visit this week… oh well!
