movie news: First trailer for Saoirse Ronan’s How I Live Now

Saoirse Ronan’s light just keeps burning brighter and brighter.

Today sees the release of the first trailer for her latest film. In How I Live Now, Saoirse Ronan plays an American teenager with attitude who’s sent to live in the seemingly idyllic English countryside for the summer. While Ronan’s Daisy struggles to adjust to the change of pace from Manhattan, she suddenly finds her world completely changed again when World War breaks out.

How I Live Now is based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Meg Rosoff, winner of the British Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize and the American Printz Award for young-adult literature.

If you’re a follower of average film reviews then you’ll know that I do love a good apocalyptic drama, even if it does sound like this one is a bit more of a romance. Basically anything with a hint of dystopia and I’m there so this trailer has definitely piqued my interest. Happily, it also looks as though Saoirse Ronan is branching out a little, I do think she’s getting a bit typecast as the ethereal, oddly mature child, so stroppy teenager is welcome. Even if it looks like it’s just for a little while.

Especially of note is that How I Live Now is directed by Kevin McDonald, director of The Last King of Scotland and the fantastic 2003 documentary, Touching The Void.

How I Live Now has crept into the schedule for me, I hadn’t heard anything of note about it till today, but it’s certainly going on my list of ones to keep an eye out for in the rest of 2013.

Take a look at the trailer and let me know what you think.

How I Live Now is in UK and Irish cinemas on 04 October 2013
