feature: BAFTA Awards (2010) nominations list

Ah the awards season, don’t you love it? I do, it gives me a list of new films I can watch and judge. Today’s list comes from the British Acadamy of Film and Television Arts. I’m gonna throw in a few comments as I go but I’m not a seasoned BAFTA Award watcher by any means, actually I’ve never watched the BAFTAs, so I ain’t standing by these predictions at all…

edit: I made a few edits before watching the BAFTAs.

BEST FILM
AVATAR (James Cameron, Jon Landau)
AN EDUCATION (Finola Dwyer, Amanda Posey)
THE HURT LOCKER (Nominees TBC)
PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL PUSH BY SAPPHIRE (Lee Daniels, Sarah Siegel-Magness, Gary Magness)
UP IN THE AIR (Ivan Reitman, Jason Reitman, Daniel Dubiecki)

Hmm… I think The Hurt Locker has a good chance here, it’s really been gaining momentum lately. I just can’t see Up In The Air getting it. Course there’s always Avatar. It may not have the best script, story or acting but it is a great cinema experience. People like that.

OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM
AN EDUCATION (Finola Dwyer, Amanda Posey, Lone Scherfig, Nick Hornby)
FISH TANK (Kees Kasander, Nick Laws, Andrea Arnold)
IN THE LOOP (Kevin Loader, Adam Tandy, Armando Iannucci, Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell, Tony Roche)
MOON (Stuart Fenegan, Trudie Styler, Duncan Jones, Nathan Parker)
NOWHERE BOY ( Robert Bernstein, Douglas Rae, Kevin Loader, Sam Taylor-Wood, Matt Greenhalgh)

This kind of depends on if they give An Education best picture. If they do then it’ll either be In The Loop or Moon. If not then An Education.

OUTSTANDING DEBUT BY A BRITISH WRITER, DIRECTOR OR PRODUCER
LUCY BAILEY, ANDREW THOMPSON, ELIZABETH MORGAN HEMLOCK, DAVID PEARSON (Directors, Producers – Mugabe and the White African)
ERAN CREEVY (Writer/Director – Shifty)
STUART HAZELDINE (Writer/Director – Exam)
DUNCAN JONES (Director – Moon)
SAM TAYLOR-WOOD (Director – Nowhere Boy)

I think I’ll have to go for Moon here.

DIRECTOR
AVATAR (James Cameron)
DISTRICT 9 (Neill Blomkamp)
AN EDUCATION (Lone Scherfig)
THE HURT LOCKER (Kathryn Bigelow)
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (Quentin Tarantino)

I’d love Tarantino to get it, legend that he is… but I reckon it’s going to be another Cameron / Bigelow showdown.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
THE HANGOVER (Jon Lucas, Scott Moore)
THE HURT LOCKER (Mark Boal)
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (Quentin Tarantino)
A SERIOUS MAN (Joel Coen, Ethan Coen)
UP (Bob Peterson, Pete Docter)

Tough one. Again, I’d love it to be Inglourious Basterds… maybe it will be? Probably The Hurt Locker though.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
DISTRICT 9 (Neill Blomkamp, Terri Tatchell)
AN EDUCATION (Nick Hornby)
IN THE LOOP (Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci, Tony Roche)
PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL PUSH BY SAPPHIRE (Geoffrey Fletcher)
UP IN THE AIR (Jason Reitman, Sheldon Turner)

I honestly don’t know on this one. Mainly because I haven’t seen 3 out of the 5 nominees…

edit: having seen more of them now I’ll go for Precious but I know the Brits might throw a curveball with In The Loop

FILM NOT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
BROKEN EMBRACES (Agustín Almodóvar, Pedro Almodóvar)
COCO BEFORE CHANEL (Carole Scotta, Caroline Benjo, Philippe Carcassonne, Anne Fontaine)
LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (Carl Molinder, John Nordling, Tomas Alfredson)
A PROPHET (Pascal Caucheteux, Marco Cherqui, Alix Raynaud, Jacques Audiard)
THE WHITE RIBBON (Stefan Arndt, Veit Heiduschka, Margaret Menegoz, Michael Haneke)

Out of these 5 I’ve only seen A Prophet, I think it’ll probably be The White Ribbon though. I hear it’s great and there’s a good buzz about it. I really didn’t have a great year when it came to non english film. I’m going to have to rectify that this year…

edit: mind you… A Prophet is picking up the buzz recently and I haven’t heard about The White Ribbon in a while… still… probably The White Ribbon

ANIMATED FILM
CORALINE (Henry Selick)
FANTASTIC MR FOX (Wes Anderson)
UP (Pete Docter)

It’ll be a massive upset if Up doesn’t win this. Then again, I would give it to Fantastic Mr. Fox… I’d like to think there’s a glimmer of hope for that, after all Roald Dahl was a British author… Then again they might be upset since the characters were played by Americans… who knows.

LEADING ACTOR
JEFF BRIDGES (Crazy Heart)
GEORGE CLOONEY (Up in the Air)
COLIN FIRTH (A Single Man)
JEREMY RENNER (The Hurt Locker)
ANDY SERKIS (Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll)

Another tough one. I’d like Colin Firth to get it actually, mainly because I think his chances for an Oscar are fairly slim so this is his best chance of a major award. I haven’t seen the film though so may be he really is that good and he really is in contention for the Oscar. If not Firth then I’d like Jeremy Renner to get it.

It’ll probably be Clooney or Bridges. Probably Bridges.

edit: Actually you know what? I’ve changed my mind. I’m going to put my faith in Firth. Firth will win this!

LEADING ACTRESS
CAREY MULLIGAN (An Education)
SAOIRSE RONAN (The Lovely Bones)
GABOUREY SIDIBE (Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire)
MERYL STREEP (Julie & Julia)
AUDREY TAUTOU (Coco Before Chanel)

Did you know Meryl Streep has only won 2 Oscars? I can’t believe that. On those grounds I think she should win this.

edit: Mind you, having now seen Precious I find it hard to see beyond that amazing performance. I’m changing my mind – I say it will be Gabourey Sidibe.

SUPPORTING ACTOR
ALEC BALDWIN (It’s Complicated)
CHRISTIAN McKAY (Me and Orson Welles)
ALFRED MOLINA (An Education)
STANLEY TUCCI (The Lovely Bones)
CHRISTOPH WALTZ (Inglourious Basterds)

Stanley Tucci is very good in The Lovely Bones but I reckon Christoph Waltz has this one, could be the only award Inglourious Basterds gets.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
ANNE-MARIE DUFF (Nowhere Boy)
VERA FARMIGA (Up in the Air)
ANNA KENDRICK (Up in the Air)
MO’NIQUE (Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire)
KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS (Nowhere Boy)

Hmm… I can’t wait to see Precious and I’ve heard Mo’nique puts on a great performance so I’m gonna go for her in this one.

MUSIC
AVATAR (James Horner)
CRAZY HEART (T-Bone Burnett, Stephen Bruton)
FANTASTIC MR FOX (Alexandre Desplat)
SEX & DRUGS & ROCK & ROLL (Chaz Jankel)
UP (Michael Giacchino)

edit: has to be Crazy Heart

CINEMATOGRAPHY
AVATAR (Mauro Fiore)
DISTRICT 9 (Trent Opaloch)
THE HURT LOCKER (Barry Ackroyd)
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (Robert Richardson)
THE ROAD (Javier Aguirresarobe)

edit: Hmm… difficult one and I’m very into cinematography… I’ll say… The Hurt Locker

EDITING
AVATAR (Stephen Rivkin, John Refoua, James Cameron)
DISTRICT 9 (Julian Clarke)
THE HURT LOCKER (Bob Murawski, Chris Innis)
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (Sally Menke)
UP IN THE AIR (Dana E. Glauberman)

Inglourious? I hope! Probably The Hurt Locker

PRODUCTION DESIGN
AVATAR (Rick Carter, Robert Stromberg, Kim Sinclair)
DISTRICT 9 (Philip Ivey, Guy Potgieter)
HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE (Stuart Craig, Stephenie McMillan)
THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS (Nominees TBC)
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (David Wasco, Sandy Reynolds Wasco)

Avatar? I do want to highlight here that Imaginarium was very good production wise too…

COSTUME DESIGN
BRIGHT STAR (Janet Patterson)
COCO BEFORE CHANEL (Catherine Leterrier)
AN EDUCATION (Odile Dicks-Mireaux)
A SINGLE MAN (Arianne Phillips)
THE YOUNG VICTORIA (Sandy Powell)

It often seems to go to the costume drama so let’s say The Young Victoria.

SOUND
AVATAR (Christopher Boyes, Gary Summers, Andy Nelson, Tony Johnson, Addison Teague)
DISTRICT 9 (Brent Burge, Chris Ward, Dave Whitehead, Michael Hedges, Ken Saville)
THE HURT LOCKER (Ray Beckett, Paul N. J. Ottosson)
STAR TREK (Peter J. Devlin, Andy Nelson, Anna Behlmer, Mark Stoeckinger, Ben Burtt)
UP (Tom Myers, Michael Silvers, Michael Semanick)

edit: I really don’t know much about this category… I’m gonna guess Avatar… or maybe Star Trek.. it’s usually the big blow-y up movies that get this award isn’t it?

SPECIAL VISUAL EFFECTS
AVATAR (Joe Letteri, Stephen Rosenbaum, Richard Baneham, Andrew R. Jones)
DISTRICT 9 (Dan Kaufman, Peter Muyzers, Robert Habros, Matt Aitken)
HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE (John Richardson, Tim Burke, Tim Alexander, Nicolas Aithadi)
THE HURT LOCKER (Richard Stutsman)
STAR TREK (Roger Guyett, Russell Earl, Paul Kavanagh, Burt Dalton)

If there’s such thing as a sure thing, it’s Avatar here.

MAKE UP & HAIR
COCO BEFORE CHANEL (Thi Thanh Tu Nguyen, Jane Milon)
AN EDUCATION (Lizzie Yianni Georgiou)
THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS (Sarah Monzani)
NINE (Peter ‘Swords’ King)
THE YOUNG VICTORIA (Jenny Shircore)

Again, the costume drama is usually the winner… The Young Victoria.

SHORT ANIMATION
THE GRUFFALO (Michael Rose, Martin Pope, Jakob Schuh, Max Lang)
THE HAPPY DUCKLING (Gili Dolev)
MOTHER OF MANY (Sally Arthur, Emma Lazenby)

SHORT FILM
14 Asitha Ameresekere
I DO AIR James Bolton, Martina Amati
JADE Samm Haillay, Daniel Elliott
MIXTAPE Luti Fagbenle, Luke Snellin
OFF SEASON Jacob Jaffke, Jonathan van Tulleken

THE ORANGE RISING STAR AWARD (voted for by the public)
JESSE EISENBERG
NICHOLAS HOULT
CAREY MULLIGAN
TAHAR RAHIM
KRISTEN STEWART

Hmm… Given the popularity of Twilight, I’d imagine it’d have to be Kristen Stewart.
