releasing this week: Shrek Forever After

Well well, it seems that none of the other major studios fancy their chances against Shrek Forever After this week, Paramount Pictures pretty much has the place to itself. There are a few smaller foreign language releases so I’ll talk about them later.

Shrek Forever After posterSo… you know there’s a big green orge… but what’s Shrek Forever After all about?

Truth is I haven’t watched a Shrek film since the first one… oh no wait, I did watch the second one, I remember that cute cat. Not much else though. That cat is back for this installment however he ain’t lookin’ so cute no more. Aww… poor kitty cat. Anyway, obviously enough I’m not a big fan of Shrek but that’s not to say that I won’t watch this. In fact I’m seeing it tomorrow night. Hopefully I won’t need to know what happened in the last one…

…I don’t think I will though. The premise of this one is that, through a twist in the tale, Shrek finds themselves in a world where he never existed. He never married the Princess or did any of those things that happened in the other film that I don’t remember… It sounds like standard fairytale stuff and undoubtedly it’ll all turn out well in the end. I’m sure the kids will love it.

To be honest I don’t really have anything else to say about Shrek. Sorry it’s so short this week.

Other films out this week…

As I mentioned earlier, Shrek is the only big film out this week so the rest of these films are probably only going to be showing in either Cineworld, The IFI, Light House Cinema or The Screen Cinema

When You’re StrangeTom DiCillo documentary about The Doors. Unlike many music documentaries, this film eschews the talking heads in favour of a narration by Johnny Depp. I don’t know about that. I usually like the talking heads. Apparently there’s some great archive footage though.

Heartbreaker – French comedy / romance about a guy whose job it is to break up relationships. And he’s good at it. However, when a rich man gives him one week to break up his daughters upcoming nuptials an English gentlemen who seems to be her perfect match, will he find himself up to the task? I actually think this sounds pretty funny. Starring Romain Duris, Vanessa Paradis and Andrew Lincoln as her fiancé. Well that settles it for me, she’d be mad to leave him…. I should really buy Love Actually on DVD.

White Material – French drama about a white family who own a coffee plantation in Africa. When the family find themselves outlawed in their own home their world crumbles around them. Directed by Claire Denis. Unfortunately I’m not familiar with her work but it would appear that she is quite the auteur. I’m not being sarcastic on this occasion. This film was nominated for the Golden Palm at the Venice Film Festival. Could be a good one.

Tetro – Written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola this new drama starrs Vincent Gallo as the Tetro of the title (I thought I’d stay away from the word titular this week). Every family has it’s secrets. Tetro had a promising career as a writer until he threw it all away and disappeared. Over 10 years later his brother comes to find him and discovers why he did why he did.

Shrek Forever After is currently running previews across the country. White Material, Tetro, Heartbreaker and When You’re Strange are all in cinemas from Friday 2nd July 2010.
