movie news: Man of Steel teaser trailers released

Man of Steel teaser poster, Comic-ConIn case you haven’t had enough of the dark and troubled superheroes, here comes another. Yes, it’s the latest Superman reboot, the Man of Steel.

If you’ve read my review of The Dark Knight Rises you’ll know that, while I enjoyed the film, I’m not a massive fan of the broody, moody and downright gloomy superheroes. I like my superheroes bright and fun…

… so the fact that Christopher Nolan is heavily involved in this makes me a little apprehensive about what to expect from the superest of superheroes, Superman.

Of course, I’m jumping the gun a little. Just because Christopher Nolan is story writer and producer on this, doesn’t mean it’ll necessarily follow his style. Zack Snyder is helming it and though his films do tend to err on the side of seriousness over fun, he has his own inimitable style. 300 and Watchman were good fun and hopfully this will be too.

It’s not out till next year so there isn’t much known about it at the moment, aside from the cast. Superman will be played by Henry Cavill, last seen in the terribly tiresome The Cold Light of Day, Russell Crowe plays Jor-El, Amy Adams covers off Lois Lane and the villains are represented by Michael Shannon as General Zod and Antje Traue as Faora. Since it’s a reboot I’m kind of assuming it’s re-telling of the origin story… but I could be wrong there.

Anyway, here’s the teaser trailers, which debuted before showings of The Dark Knight Rises this weekend. Let me know what you think.

Man of Steel is due in UK, US and Irish cinemas on 14th June 2013

What do you think the chances are that having seen the success of the Avengers for the Marvel universe, this might be a step towards the DC equivalent? i.e. the Justice League?

Word is it’s already on the cards

Personally though I think they need to sort a few things out before going hell for leather with it. Firstly… no brainer, they’ll need Man of Steel to be a hit. Then I would think they’d need a successful Flash movie under their belts too, and a Green Lantern reboot… though in theory they could get away with having one announced for after a Justice League movie.

The Avengers worked because everyone already knew the heroes (and villain) so they didn’t need to spend time introducing them – they could make a kick-ass movie instead. The only super friends that movie audiences really know in The Justice League are Batman and Superman.

What might be interesting would be if they go for the full gritty dark take on it. It wouldn’t be my choice – I’d be happier if I never saw that style of superhero movie again – but it would set it apart from Avengers and (obviously) tie-in better with the latest Batman films.

Ah yes. I had never seen the Green Lantern movie, but heard it was bad. My immediate feeling was they shouldn’t have used Ryan Reynolds because he adds a “-comedy” to everything he’s in.

This would have been perfect for a Deadpool movie (I pretend that Origins: Wolverine and it’s freaky Deadpool never happened). Not so good for a Green Lantern.

Flash?…hmm…he is kinda dull. I remember the 90s TV Series being fun. They’d need a really charming actor and a great storyline to win hearts.

I’m surprised Wonder Woman hasn’t been mentioned. She’s the one strong female lead and considered one of the core 3 characters with Batman and Superman. And her reboot never even got off the ground. I am all for her classic costume to be redesigned to be more practical – the X-Men tactical suits from the first movie worked very well in moving things away from the yellow spandex into gritty “reality”. But somehow the execution was camp compared to the illustrator’s concept that actually looked cool: http://alt-world.com/altworld/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/wonder-woman02.jpg.
