The Raven

Edgar Allan Poe

planned release date: 09 Mar 2012 (US)

This week we’ve got a first trailer for The Raven. An upcoming thriller from director James McTeigue, long time collaborator of The Wachowskis and director of Ninja Assassin.

The film isn’t an adapatation of his stories or a biography of his life as you might expect, it’s kind of a fictional mixture of the two. It stars John Cusack as Poe and follows an investigation by a detective (played by Luke Evans) into a series of murders inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories.

When a mother and her daughter around found murdered in exactly the same manner as the women in Poe’s The Murders in the Rue Morgue suspicion first falls to Poe, until the serial killer start sending messages, taunting Poe to solve the case.

It looks like a decent ol’ flick. Well… it looks like it could be a decent flick. I sincerely hope it is anyway. It has a kind of Zodiac vibe about it and I loved Zodiac… It also seems to have a bit of a Saw thing going on as well, and as much as I love the first 4 Saw films, the last 3 were muck. I really hope McTeigue doesn’t mistake shocks and gore for a plot.

Here’s the trailer, let me know what you think.

The Avengers

planned release date: 27 Apr 2012

In case you hadn’t heard, there’s a trailer out for The Avengers. Between the movies that have come before it and the production itself there’s been millions and millions of dollars sunk into this one… so it better be good.

I’ve actually already done a clips and trailers for it so you can have a look at the trailer and a little announcement clip I found.

If you can find good quality versions of the end scenes from Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger then do let me know. I’d love to add them but I could only find ones that had been recorded in the theatre and they looked crap.

Die Hard 5

planned release date: 14 Feb 2013

Only the bare minimum of news about Die Hard 5 really but it’s something. There has been an official (albeit brief) plot synopsis and a release date:

“Since the first Die Hard in 1988, John [McClane] has found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, with the skills and attitude to always be the last man standing, making him enemy #1 for terrorists the world over. Now, [McClane] faces his greatest challenge ever, this time on an international stage, when his estranged son Jack is caught up in the daring prison escape of a rogue Russian leader, and father and son [McClane] must work together to keep each other alive and keep the world safe for democracy.”

and we’ve also got… wait for it… A title!

Yes that’s right, Die Hard 5 will now be called A Good Day to Die Hard.

There’s been a lot of complaining on the internet about it but to be honest, I think it’s fine. They’ve all had pretty stupid names really, let’s review:

Die Hard 2: Die Harder
Die Hard: With A Vengence
Die Hard 4.0: Live Free or Die Hard

Come on. A Good Day to Die Hard is really no worse…

That’s all for this week folks. Tune in next week for more news from me.
